Wolf Animal Totem Meaning

Thought I would take a little diversion in creativity. Recently much of my work has been revolving around the Winged Ones, so this weekend I finished up working on a Wolf Totem. This recent painting is of a Wolf and Dreamcatcher, named "Dreaming Wolf".

The Wolf is pack oriented and is symbolic of unity of the pack and community. They are social creatures and have a strong sense of family. Boundaries and rules are important to them, as they have a hierarchy that they abide by. (This would be a good totem for those that have difficulty setting boundaries in their lives).

They teach us about having confidence in our selves and loyalty to those in our circles, of course all done with structure and balance.

Seasons of an Artist

The changing of the Seasons affects my artwork in the obvious way by influencing my color palette, but the season itself many times will change my tone and themes. Winter is a very introspective time for me. While it's not one of my favorite seasons, I understand it's importance and accept it.

I miss the rich hues of the woods and the fullness of the mountain silhouettes; the barren trees bring a sense of "rawness" and in turn I find myself much more serious and contemplative.

While I know that soon spring will arrive and nature will be budding with life again, this quiet time often can make the artist side feel as if it is curled up as if in hibernation.

This feeling was the inspiration to this weekend's painting, "Cocoon".

The symbolism in the waves of hair are reflective of her "cocoon", encompassing the rawness of her body and soul. Each section of hair is representing either Mother Earth with the natural earthy tones and sacred spirals, Father Sky with the indigo blue star scene in the sky, or the patina blue Feather like sections symbolic of freedom and soaring. The background brings in the colors of winter's ocean. Each piece of the cocoon embraces and nourishes her through this time of reflection, until the time when she will emerge again stronger and more beautiful than before.

For the past few weeks I have had the Pink Flamingo on my mind strongly. He stayed on my mind until finally I painted him yesterday.Once the last brushstroke was completed, I sat down and contemplated over his symbolism.

The Pink Flamingo is a part of the Heron family, who are very familiar to me. I suppose the color and it's grace are what have been enchanting me. Pink is symbolic for the Heart Chakra in Chakra Healing, representative of the heart, love, and our emotional center. He is a reminder to find balance with your emotions and urges one to contemplate the types of relationships in your life. Are you attracting healthy relationships? Are you carrying too much of the past into your present?

The Flamingo is about Happiness in Love and Relationships. It reminds you to not be afraid of love, but to embrace it with open arms. In order to do that, be confident with your Self, and what your needs and desires are.

Stewards of the Earth..Our Interconnectedness with Nature

I try to surround myself with people of like-mind, people that find an importance in caring for our Earth and take responsibility for the footprint they leave. I have such a deep respect for the gifts we receive from our environment, and not just the obvious things such as the sustainability of food, water, plant life, but to have a gratitude for the natural balance and peace we can feel when engaged in our surroundings. I marvel in the fact that when sitting in our homes and offices we can become so stressed and worried and look at things as if they're black and white....and then the moment we step outside we feel relief. Black and white doesn't seems so simple anymore, because the color palette explodes upon you, the air comforts your cheek, and our heart beat becomes "one" with the Earth. The rhythm sways our spirit and we exhale.

This feeling is what inspired my latest painting, "Stewards of the Earth"

The painting has multiple layers giving a great deal of depth to the subject. The tree silhouette, Tree of Life, was created with yet another silhouette inside it, that of the Turtle Totem. The symbolism of the Turtle is motherhood of the Earth and healing. Within the framework of the turtle are 7 human figures which are the stewards. The design of the turtle shell lays over the humans. Inside the tree trunk, you find two more tree silhouettes, growing and blooming, and the main tree (the Tree of Life) is sprouting it's new growth for the season, for the cycles of life.

I used hues of Periwinkle blue, Raw Umber, Titanium White, Grey,and Sap Green, all representing different seasons.

Symbolism is important in all of my paintings, to convey the processes of my spirit.

Feeling Beauty

I think most of us agree that the mainstream media is challenging on the self esteem of a woman. The constant barrage of advertisements trying to convince you that you "need" to look like "this" in order to be loved and admired. So easily we can fall into their trap, feeling inadequate, until we're uncomfortable in our own skin.

One simple truth is

" When you Feel glorious...you Look glorious"

When we can pull away the layers of negative self-talk, and kick the "saboteur" to the curb, we can begin to heal our goddess within. When we allow her to emerge, a sense of grace returns and it emanates through us.

It brings a glow to our skin, a kick in our step, and a surety in our voice. We seem to stand a little taller. Through our grace we begin to love ourselves and each thing about us more and more - with an understanding of gratefulness for every square inch of this vessel we reside in.

How do we feel this grace? We can feel it when we enjoy every aspect of taking care of our body, as if tending to a garden, with patience and tenderness. Allow yourself Time; time to devote to rituals that make you feel divine. Surround yourself with colors that make you feel vibrant. Do you have those colors in your wardrobe? Keep vases of cut flowers in your home, maybe even a vase of them where you get dressed or do your hair. Adorn yourself with jewelry and accessories that you normally save for "special" occasions, reminding yourself that every day is a special day. Fill your home with beautiful smells from candles, incense, essential oils, and flowers.

When we take the extra time and care in honoring ourselves, it confirms to our spirit that we love ourselves and becomes apparent on the outside as well as on the inside.

A Weekend of Art and Nesting

The Cold month of December has brought the rapid arrival of Nesting to our home. While we continue to create our Artwork, at a bit a bit of a slower pace, we are also enjoying the simple things that winter brings in getting ready to settle down for the season.

My Frida Kahlo apron

Out comes the Frida Kahlo apron my mother gave me a few years ago and the baking proceeds.

I do a lot more cooking and baking in the winter, but find that I don't really end up eating more. It's more the "Meditation" that it provides. The repetitive stirring and chopping is very soothing to me, and clears the mind from it's clutter.

These last few weeks I have been very attracted to things with Wings, birds, butterflies, dragonflies....all with the ability to fly...all symbolic of freedom.

"Departure" was created to represent those few moments when you are ready to take off in flight...when you have "butterflies" in your stomach..you're filled with anticipation. Fear and Excitement fill your soul and yet you await, ready to escape the stagnancy and walls that you have built around you, and soar into a new world of possibilities.

Feng Shui for Hanging your Art

Your home is a reflection of who you are. It is here that you return at the end of the day for nurturing, inspiration, rest, and renewal. I believe that great care should be taken to create a home that inspires you to take a deep breath and smile when you walk through the door. When your space is in harmony, it is a center of energy, a place for you to become grounded.

As we go through our day we expose ourselves to the energies of others, power struggles, confrontations, and stress. When we communicate with other people, we are encountering their times of happiness, sadness, excitement or lack of excitement and possibly carry this with us. Often we may feel periods of anxiousness without ever knowing why. It may be at these times that we are on an overload of diverse energy.

Have you ever noticed that you experience times of feeling stressed, but after spending times outdoors you feel better, uplifted, lighter, and more serene? The outdoors grounds us. It renews or connection with the Earth and balance. It is this energy that we wish to integrate into our home. Feng Shui is one tool that we can use to achieve this.

Feng Shui has existed for thousands of years originating in China. Quite simply it is the art of placement. We use this art of placement to arrange our furniture and our “symbolic treasures” in a way that produces a more harmonized tone. While there are many schools (or forms) of Feng Shui we will be using the Bagua System, which tends to be the easiest for Westerners.

There are many benefits that can result from using Feng Shui:

More Active Love Life

Harmonious Relationships

Love and Romance

Relaxation

Advancing or starting a career

…are some of the few.

Below is a Bagua Map that is used in directing placement. You basically superimpose it over a single room or the entire house layout. For instance, if you are wanting to use the Feng Shui principles in a single room to place Art, you would stand in the doorway of that room facing in and while holding the map in your hands look to see where how the sectors divide up in the layout.

Please note that I added colors and elements underneath each sector that are associated with it.

To apply Feng Shui in the hanging of your Art, you can do this in a few ways.

You can hang your art according to the color associations.

You can also place your Art according to the theme and symbolism of the art and place in a sector that would resonate with that.

I will provide some examples using some of my own artwork.

Example #1

If my intention was to place art in the Wealth section, I would choose Art that either correlates with the color associated OR choose Art that represents Wealth to me.

In this example I am choosing a painting of Lakshmi, the Goddess of Prosperity.

Example # 2

If you were wanting to strengthen the Wisdom (Knowledge) sector of a room, you could either choose Art that reflected the associated colors OR choose Art that represents Wisdom to you.

In this example, I chose one of my paintings called "Night Vision" of an Owl.

If my intention was to place Art in the Fame section, in this example I am choosing to place a piece with a color that coordinates with the Fame bagua sector which in this case is Red as you can see in the Bagua Map above.

Gourd Art ~ Using the Gourd as a Palette

More and more we integrate the Gourd into our artwork. Having always been drawn to using natural materials in our creations, this medium becomes not only a perfect palette, but provides so many possibilities.

Granted, the cleaning of the gourd is time consuming, but if you are not wanting to exert the energy for that step, you can always purchase your gourds from a farm that will do it for you. We get many of our gourds from Ghost Creek Gourd Farm

Otherwise, you'll need to use a little elbow grease, a Scoth-brite pad, and a 10% Bleach solution.
If you are choosing to paint your gourds, you have a diversity of paints you can use. Acrylics or Oil Paints can be used, while many others use leather dyes. Personally, acrylics are our preferred paint because it dries quickly, blends well, and has nice coverage.

The Symbolism of Wings and Using Art to Heal

The events in my life and the evolving of my spirit as I move through life's lessons, often produce themselves in my artwork. Colors, subject matter, and symbolism are reflected in my creations, and while it does so I remain flexible with it.

Maybe it is the coming of winter, or just the current passage I am transitioning through with my disability, that is causing my focus at present to be on Wings and Flight. The representation of freedom is what is dominate; the freedom from feeling "stuck", the freedom from pain, the freedom from my inner critic nagging at me.

For those of you that are familiar with the archetypes that are representative of our character, I pay particular attention to the archetypes present in my life. One of my archetypes is the "Wounded Healer". Carl Jung did a great deal of writing about this archetype. The Wounded Healer is the person who has gone through a great suffering and because of that suffering has now become a source of inspiration to others. There is a shadow side and a light side to each archetype. I think that being aware of those sides allows you to find a balance and use it to create a positive influence in your life.

As a child I experienced a profound event that forever changed my life; physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Looking back on the course of my life, my mission was to help inspire others through support, conversation, or art. At the time I didn't realize "why", but it felt natural to me. It shaped who I was. As an adult, I understand.

So, as I move through the course of my life, I have found that when I share my processes, it not only helps me, but helps others as well.

The current phase in my life presents a challenge with mobility, I believe which is causing this great attraction to Wings and Flight.

I began a recent series, without conscious intention actually, on wings integrated into my paintings. The first painting was of an Owl Butterfly found in the rain forests of South America.

The markings on the butterfly resemble eyes, nature's way of distracting predators and providing balance.

The second painting is called "She Flies with the Owls". Meant to be symbolic of learning the wisdom of the owl, it's intuition, sight, and walking in both worlds.

The Spirit of the Flute

It doesn't matter your age, gender, culture, or race, the Native Flute brings a sense of peace and relaxation to most people who experience it's beauty.

Eastern Woodlands Style Flutes by John Fry

It's song can adapt to most any genre of music, from native to classical, blues to world, cultural to pop. Within seconds of listening, a breath of relief can be heard and shoulders relax from their rigid posture.

John has been a flute carrier for more than twenty years, performing and teaching, as well as crafting them when he has the opportunity. He creates them in an Eastern Woodlands Style. Only Cedar is used and never any stains, in order to keep the natural beauty of the wood. Several passes of hand sanding are involved in his process, giving it a most silky feel. When finally near complete he wood burns his signature in to the flute and attaches a gemstone at the end.

The Native Flute has had importance to many, to bring relaxation, for ceremony, courtship, healing, or simply for the joy of music.

We have watched many people over the years who were once listeners, evolve into players, as they found the beauty and healing it could bring to their lives.

The Owl Butterfly: It's Beauty and Strength

Portraying nature and animals in my artwork is a large focus for me. The ability to bring their strengths and lessons to light in a visual way, is yet another confirmation of understanding them. As of late, I am intrigued and attracted to the Winged Ones, symbolically I suppose that the wings are engaging me because of the freedom in life that they represent.

Recently while studying on various animals I came across the Owl Butterfly, yes it's common name is truly Owl Butterfly. He comes from the genus Caligo, meaning darkness, which would be accurate since they do much of their flying at dusk when fewer predators are present.

The beauty of this Owl Butterfly is that his wings look as if they are an owl's eyes, which deceived the predators, thinking that it is something other than what it truly is.

Immediately I began to paint this beauty.

Fox Totem and it's Meaning

The Fox Totem is often misunderstood. His meaning and symbolism is quite complex.

The Fox teaches the need and benefits of learning to camouflage in order to walk around unnoticed. This allows you to hear and see things that you might not otherwise be aware of, bringing a better clarity to situations.

His fur is very thick, making him appear larger than he is, which is another lesson he teaches..the ability to have a larger "presence " in life when needed. It gives the illusion of a greater stature, making adversaries think twice about engaging, that Fox would not be easily overpowered judging by size alone.

The fox is monogamous, living alone for some months and then in a den, and are comfortable with being alone AND with their partner. He teaches to enjoy one's completeness, to enjoy self, allowing for a comfort level when they are on their own.

Their hunting style is similar to feline, and they carry great feminine energy.

Why am I an Artist? How Art Makes Us Feel

Why am I an Artist? Well, that could be a pretty complex question, but simply..because of how it makes me feel. Not only how it affects me, but how I see it affects others as well.

I have always believed that Art was Healing. The colors, the subject matter, the shapes, the composition, what it says, and what it doesn't say all lend to the effect on us. As a child at the age of four I received by first piece of Art, a painting of "Faith, Hope, and Charity", the three women...or were they angels..muses? Doesn't matter. I was given this painting in the pediatric ward at the hospital after my surgery, and I still have it to this day. The symbolism is what is important to me, and I realize that the symbolism is what I carry with me to this day, in my own Art and in my own Life.

Much research has been done on the effects of Art in our lives, showing that art has an effect on our nervous system and brain neurotransmitters. It can help to change our perception and attitude and that color and shape have a therapeutic influence.

Friedrich Schelling, a German philosopher, felt that geometrical forms could influence our emotions (ie. a curved line symbolizing flexibility, a wavy line symbolizing life, and a elliptic horizontal line symbolizing tenderness).

Music has been a large part of my life since the age of four as well, when I began piano studies. Today it's healing force is still strong in my daily life. Dr. Rubinstein, a Russian psychologist, noticed that "minor" chords helped in relaxing muscles, while "major" chords excited them. Instrumental music activates the right cerebral hemisphere of the brain. Today I work on music endeavours with my husband, mostly instrumental music of Native Flute and Piano, but also Guided Imagery Meditations laid over the the Native Flute music. We personally believe that the body has the ability to heal itself when it is in a relaxed state, therefore our focus is to bring that into our music.

I am a strong supporter of the Arts in all modalities, not only for it's pure beauty and intelligence, but for it's physiological effects our mind and body, the freedom it affords the artist, and it's function to use our voice with not only our vocal chords but with our heart and hands.

I began creating a series of painting that I find "Healing', who's intention is to integrate the mind and body as a whole. Three of the paintings are complete, with more in the process.

Day of the Dead Painting 2011

This year to celebrate Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos),I created a new original painting named Madame Dragonfly.

It was important to me to integrate the Dragonflies into the painting, for their symbolism of Light and Transformation. It is the carrying on and honoring of the beauty that was exuded in life, that now transitions into that next place that is the intention of focus.

She herself is a dragonfly, Madame Dragonfly, as you can see by her wings. She is surrounded by 4 small dragonflies that on close inspection will show that they thmeselves are dragonfly skeletons. She emminates beauty and vibrance in both worlds.

Gourd Rattles hold Music, Art, and Spirituality

Rattles have long been used in Ceremony by many Indigenous Peoples, and still are to this day. They are a tool used in spiritual ceremony, but are also used for percussion in Music along with being works of Art.

Our Rattles are created from Gourds. Most have wood handles that are wrapped with leather, but some are one entire Gourd. We fill them with a combination of little noisemakers, dried beans, beads, small gemstone chips...each having their own distinct sound. Many times we try to match the sound to that of the Art that was painted on the Gourd.

My Attraction to the Tree of Life

I have created many versions of the Tree of Life over the years, and keep going back to it again and again in my painting. It's importance to me in my art has been strong because it's philosophy represents the connectedness of all living things, and that we are all related.

The Tree of Life has had symbolism in many cultures and religions; Norse mythology, India, Judaism,Turkic Mythology,Buddhism, Baha'i Faith, Chinese mythology, Christianity, and Egyptian culture.

It represents our human connection with the physical world of nature, the connection of the heavens and the underworld, the connection of good and evil, and the cycle of life. It's vast symbolism encompassed in the Tree is simple yet complex.

My attraction reminds me always, that there is something bigger than myself, a complex woven system that ties us all together.

Owl Totem and the Mystery

Owls have intrigued us two-legged for many years, primarily because they are a nocturnal bird. They see in the night what we do not see, and they hear in the night what we do not hear. They carry a wisdom that is primarily unknown to us, that of the Mystery.

They are aware of the Shadows, the things that exist that we are not aware of, and the things we do not understand. Studying the Owl Totem, helps us learn to be conscious of our surroundings, and the motivations of others. It helps us reveal secrets.

The Great Horned Owl looks as if he has ears, although they are truly tufts of feathers. Symbolically he seems to be able to hear, what we can not.

Their flight is silent, helping them in their hunt, and is a good reminder to us that when we are "seeking", it may be best to be silent and observant in order for the answers to come to light.

Kokopelli and Kokopelli Mana Gourd Art Bowl

Stories have swirled for years and years about Kokopelli and sometimes you will hear them about Kokopelli Mana, his counterpart.

Kokopelli has long symbolized fertility, abundance, replenishing, music and dance. Stories abound on "when" you will see him, many say he brings the spring...others say the hump on his back is filled with seeds for planting, or it is filled with songs, and some even say the bag is filled with children whom he gives to young women that have no children.

Whatever his story, I enjoy seeing him depicted with this counterpart, Kokopelli Mana, because of course we ALL have another half in this world.

This week I seem to have a theme of works. Of course they always correspond with my own life, or those around me, and I find myself focusing on releasing stress and attending to one's personal needs - finding a balance in your spirit.

Her symbolism seemed to come to life on it's own, as I noticed when I was finished that her hair that continues to flow...on second glance looks as if it is a tree behind her or OF her..a balance and strength. She holds the tapestry of life's worries and chores, that she allows to flow away for a moment, giving her time to breathe and come to a grounded and secure place in her own right. The Circle of Life resides above her, a continuum of the Universe, and she has found a way to keep her balance, to have a peace while dancing in the waves of Life and Love.

Creating of the Blessing Bowl

This weekend we created the Blessing Bowl. I had very specific intention when I started designing this bowl. After spending the last several weeks (or shall we say months), watching those around us suffering with anxiety and stress over the economy, their jobs, and the usual triggers of worry....I thought of what I could create to be uplifting. Uplifting beyond the work that we usually do that is meant to be empowering.

So the creating began with a focused cleaning,cutting, sanding, drilling, and more cleaning of the Gourd. When it was prepared for it's transformation, careful thought and intention was in place while the design work began. Thoughtful time was spent while hand painting each small design on Gratefulness and Positive thoughts.

The initial layers of paint of Burnt Umber and Raw Sienna were done to create an aged look, to symbolize our past - lessons learned, experiences had, stories from our elders, that have helped make us who we are today.

The vibrant colors in the design work contrast the aged look, representing the Present, our Vitality, the Moment.

As I painted through the night, my thoughts were that the bowl would be filled with Affirmations and the things we are Grateful for...a kind of storing place for those times when we feel down or discouraged. I imagined the bowl filled with pieces of happiness, so that when we need that occasional pick me up, we pull one of the meaningful little pieces of paper out to remind us of what we have in life.

My hope is that whoever becomes the keeper of the Blessing Bowl, they fill it full of slips of paper that represent the treasures they hold in their heart.

Owl Totem and it's Symbolic Meaning

Owls have been intriguing humans for years.

This nocturnal bird wears a cloak that symbolizes the Mystery.

It's amazing eyesight is representative of perception and new visions opening up to you...the ability to be aware of things that others may overlook and to see things in new ways.

Owl wings have a fringe that provides them with silent flight, which is a useful lesson for us, teaching us that sometimes it is best to be silent about our ventures in order to bring the greatest success.

They carry a wisdom of the darkness, of the nocturnal, of the unseen. While some fear this wisdom, truly it affords us a balance of light and dark, a balance of the obvious and the hidden.

Owl totem medicine is extensive and for those who are studying the owl, would benefit from learning about the different types of owls to realize their depth.

The popularity of Frida Kahlo, Mexican Artist and Inspiration to many women, has grown leaps and bounds over the years. Her rich history, life as an artist, challenges with her health,zeal for life, and passionate yet stormy marriage to Diego Rivera, all lent to our fascination with her and her importance in the art world.

Each of us that admires her, more than likely has something in common that they can relate with in her.

For me, what is it that lends to my affection for her?

As an artist with a disability, I admire her for her endurance..her endurance to continue to live a full and rich life in spite of the challenges, to create what was in her heart, and her ability to use her voice in so many ways.

I think of Frida often when I am painting or sculpting, especially in those moments when I am living with great pain and feel empty..and I am soon revived in Spirit.

To me, Frida lights the candle in a darkened room.

The Bear Clan

The spirit of the Bear is similar to humans in many ways. They are creatures of habit, their diet is similar to our own, and they have the ability to walk on two legs. But what is it exactly that makes us love them?

To me, the Bear represents Power and Strength, and at the same time when you study them you can find a gentleness to them. I think this is what our big attraction is to them...a powerful being, strong and stoic, with the ability to be caring and loving. You see this profoundly when you watch a mother bear with her young, her sense of dedication and responsibility.

We as humans are always striving to strike that balance of strength and tenderness.

An Artist's Date ~ Gourd Pickin' in a Heatwave

Our dates tend to be a little different than most.

The romantic and sentimental things are done on a daily basis, you know... surprises with wild flowers, dinner and a movie, or making a cup of tea for your sweetheart. And then when a celebrating day comes when those things would be expected, we do something .......completely different.

Now, I'm not saying the sweet things don't exist, just that I guess we drum to our own beat.

We have both been sick the past few days, sick in the middle of a heatwave with low grade fevers, sinus problems, nausea, and just plain yuckiness. We had been needing to go to the gourd farm since we were completely out of gourds and we use them so often in our artwork. So, John picked this afternoon to make an appointment at the farm.

After a light lunch and a gift of earrings and a necklace that John had stashed away, we got ready to go. Today was relentlessly HOT, in the triple digits with a heat index that made if feel like 108 degrees. This made the trip a little oppressive, with a traveling time of three hours round trip, especially when we found that our air conditioning in the vehicle decided to stop working after the first 15 minutes. But we endured anyway, drinking lots of water and the occasional "Slushy" along the way.

Once we arrived, we were immediately greeted by this little guy, who so delicately perched himself on the side mirror to say hello.

Now the excitement could begin, picking through bins and barrels of wondrous gourds, each having their own potential to be a beautiful piece of Art. It didn't take long to gather many, thank goodness, because the heat was so bad the sweat was just pouring down our faces and mixing with gourd dust.

An hour later we had our stash...lots of gourds that would soon be Art Dolls, Drums, Bowls, Vases, Masks, and Jewelry. We carried our bounty to the side yard with the help of the farm's beautiful Weimeraner, who wanted to play the whole time...teasing and poking at you as you searched for your gourds.

We got lots of gourds, plus a bag full of little bitty tiny ones about the size of my thumb.

Next time I will dress a little more appropriately, since my Maryjane shoes showed they're displeasure from the barn floor.

All is well. We had a good time together..a fun time...a productive time...a HOT time...and above all, time with each other and that's what counts.

Blending Art with Natural Elements in Gourd Jewelry

As Eco-friendly Artists, using natural and recycled elements and reducing waste has always been important to us. One of our most used mediums are Gourds, creating Gourd Bowls, Masks, Sculpture, and Musical Instruments. We were having lots of small pieces left over from our creations and it always seemed a shame to just throw them out. Recently we decided to start taking those small scraps of gourds and transforming them into jewelry.

After sketching out some shapes, the pieces were cut and sanded. We then began adding small paintings to the piece, with the gourd being our Canvas, and sealing them to protect the Art. Beads, baubles and trinkets were then strung on to the pendant, and finished off by hanging them on long high quality Leather Cord. The result...a Natural Adornment displaying a work of Art.

We love that were are now completely using every piece of our Gourds, and that we have a creation that BOTH of us are designing together...John does the cutting, designing, sanding, and beadwork...and I do the painting.

The Horse represents movement and travel, the desire to do so, and the freedom that we possess. It is a symbol of our strength, power, and abundance of choices.

Many times when we are feeling stuck in this fast paced and stressful life...when we feel as if we are going through the motions of other people's expectations, the Horse can become important to us. It reminds of of our free will and passion for life.

Choices in our Directions as Artists

Like the ebb and flow of time, so goes our directions as artists. Life experiences and a continual fine tuning of our philosophies, creates more possibilities to explore within our creativity.

We have studied the growth of our Art over the years, reflecting back over the changes from the beginning until now. Trying to stay conscious that our Art is speaking not only to us, but to those who collect it, we have made choices on where to currently expend our creative energies.

For example, over the years we only sold Original paintings, and did not dabble in offering prints of those works. But we have found that certain pieces deserve the opportunity to be offered in that way, in order to reach more people who resonate with the work. So now, specific Paintings and Photography that is meaningful to us, are offered in a new forum for our collectors through Fine Art America. Here you can choose to collect some of those works, in different sizes, on archival papers, on stretched canvas, matted, framed...all a choice for you. Each week I will add more to the collection and hope that it widens the scope of possibilities.

Our jewelry has also made a transition, not only from being solely created from gemstones, but now offering more mediums with clay, bone, and glass beads. But probably our biggest change is venturing in the use of one of our favorite Natural materials...the Gourd.

The Gourd is designed and cut, painted with layers of hue to enhance it's richness, and then embellished with a complimenting bead work. Each pendant is hung on long soft leather cord that can be adjusted in length.

What we love most about the Gourd jewelry, is the ability to offer our Gourd design, Painting, and Bead work...all in one piece. It also allows us to utilize more of the gourd, instead of wasting small pieces.

So, this new evolutionary period will produce...more Paintings, Prints, and Photography...a larger line of jewelry including more natural materials....a new line of Art Doll sculptures that will be revealed soon...a larger line of Gourd Rattles, Drums, and Cedar Flutes that utilizes a blend of contemporary yet still natural persona...and some things will be discontinued.

The Symbolism of ~ For Those That Walked Before Us

My latest work is a Mixed Media piece that was inspired by a black and white postcard that I had picked up over a year ago. I've kept it close in my pile of things treasured for some reason, not really knowing why I was so attracted to it.

Looking at the postcard, I continually asked myself, "Who was she?" "How many came after her?" "Do they keep her traditions alive?" And so finally with an empty canvas staring at me, I began.

I wanted to create a piece that showed the old and the new, the elder and the young one. Bringing the space of time was important to me.

So, the piece began with attaching a few small torn images of the "ancient ones". Layers of paint in bold colors began to be brought in, with a dripping technique added to represent "Time" passing.

The Crow is added, at first because I saw an outline of him between the layers and paint strokes, and felt he needed to appear...as the Messenger, bringing the lessons and traditions to their future generation.

The painting of the "young one" was kept in a more sleek and clean area, with light colored tan and cream colors to represent the fresh and new. A few of the paint streaks some down from above her, showing some of old in the new, the carrying of tradition. Next to her are a set of steps that lead back to the old one and their ways, a bond not to be broken.

I suppose that what was so important to me about the piece, was the reminder to keep culture alive, even in this fast paced technical world that exists today.

Economic Times that are showing us all what we are made of...

A Shift began occuring two and a half years ago, slowly unraveling things as we knew them. A result of choices that had been made by the few, but impacted everyone in it's path. Our material foundations left on shaky grounds, encompassed us in fear. Some needed only make a few small adjustments, while others were severely impacted. Either way, I don't know one person that hasn't been effected.

The Dominos began to fall.

In it's wake I have watched so many people, of varying statures, fall. Losing homes, cars, jobs, self esteem, ambition, and their sense of Self. People have become frustrated and angry, placing themselves inside a bubble. At a time when we all need one another to lift our communities back up, I find many have become self absorbed...driving as if they are the only ones on the road....pushing their way through store aisles with no regard if they are stepping on you in the process...their loss of self esteem now equaling a loss of regard for others.

Some have debated "Survival of the Fittest". I suppose there could be an argument either way on that, but I know in my cellular make-up, I don't believe that turning the other cheek on humanity is what we were supposed to learn from this experience.

We are all in this together. Each and every one of us connected in some way. When one falls, more will. When one steps up, the path is illuminated for others to join.

Our relationships with one another have been weighing heavily on my mind, and while I can't change it myself, by no means...I CAN stay true to authentic self.

Because I will not allow these economic times to compromise who I am deep in my soul.

Step into your Warrior Shoes and Embrace your Life

Do you have those days, or maybe even weeks, when you just feel as if one day runs into another? When you are spending your day just going through the motions, or feeling like you have no control over the things going on in your life? While some circumstances ARE beyond our control, I believe we do have the ability to steer our course. We can prevent ourselves from feeling like victims, and be proactive in our Journey.

For me...I tell myself to Step into my Warrior Shoes, Take the Reigns, and Embrace my Life.

Important Thoughts on Reclaiming your Warrior

So much of this relies on Self-Esteem, and it's an on-going process. I find myself occasionally falling backward, and then have to stop and ask myself..Am I helping, supporting, and inspiring Myself as much as I do others? This is a huge one for me, because I can slip back into those old patterns of taking care of everyone and everything else, virtually leaving myself no time for nurturing my own Spirit.

I keep an Attributes List ~ A List of my Strengths, as a strong reminder of Who I am:

Define your Dream or Goal. How could you possibly achieve it, if you are not entirely sure what it is? This is probably the most important step in the process, because it is the Beginning.

Putting yourself #1 in decision making. In the past I would have thought this to be selfish...but I have come to learn... who better to take care of me, than me?

Be your own Life Coach. Cheer yourself on when you are accomplishing your goals, and inspire yourself when there are challenges.

Manage your relationships, and attract people into your life that are positive forces.

Ask yourself...Do my actions match my dreams? Am I actually taking steps to realize my goals?

Don't compare your journey or status to that of others. As soon as we do this, we set up ourselves up for feeling as if we are lacking. Each of our journeys are different and rich in their own ways.

A long time ago when I was meeting a friend, as soon as he saw me said..."Watch out, her hair is up. Things will be a changing". And so, again...time to put my hair up and put on my Warrior Shoes.

Perseverance ~ We're all in this Together

I have been reflecting this past week on the economic slump our country (and world community) has been in these past two to three years. A lot of focus and debate has been had by the experts on why it has happened and how to improve it, but not as much attention has been paid to the effects it has had on us mentally, emotionally, or spiritually.

I have watched people close to me over this period of time go through a series of changes to their spirit, that sometimes I don't even think we are always aware of consciously. I have seen some of the most amazing artists step away from their art, feeling a loss of inspiration and drive. I have watched friends with a strong and secure base have it yanked out from underneath them leaving them in shock. I have watched teachers put under extreme stress of keeping their jobs while at the same time trying to be an inspiration to their students. People losing their homes, that place where you go at the end of the day to rejuvenate and heal the soul. The loss of jobs, homes, careers, financial security, and faith has been widespread and harsh.

So, what now? I can't even pretend to know, except that we take it one day at a time, one moment to the next. That we reach down to the deepest core within us and know that this to will change, maybe not in the way we think, but it will.

This is the time to truly connect with our own intuitive sense, to connect with your passion, because I feel like it can guide us through this leg of the journey. Along the way, take the hand of your friend, and assist them. We need one another, now more than ever. We're all in this together.

Perseverance : Mare and Maiden ~ For Strength and Free Spirit

I look to Nature to help with a grounding balance when the world seems overwhelming. It can change your perception of things in a moment, quieting the mind so that you can re-focus. I look to the animal totems as reminders of attributes that can be helpful. And I Create in order to release, inspire, and share. Find those things that can help you find the balance you need, urging you to take the next step.

It is usually the simplest of things that can help us take that deep breath in and out and center.

The Birth of the Gourd

Gourds have been with us for at least 10,000 years, and it's uses are as diverse and wide as it's evolution. Native to Africa, they spread rapidly throughout the world.

Gourds have been and continue to be transformed into musical instruments, drums, birdhouses, bowls, bottles, baskets, masks, rattles, jewelry....the possibilities are endless. They are known as nature's pottery, and are probably my most loved medium to create with.

The amount of work that goes into a creation is time consuming when you take into consideration the growing cycle, harvest, drying cycle, and cleaning before you ever get to the actual fun part of turning it into a work of art. Once finished, it provides a sense of completion like no other.

Finding Zen in the Diner

Who would have expected to stumble upon a spiritual moment in this busy lunchtime diner? On the quest to find a renovated mill, now turned Art Gallery, frustration was building as we drove in circles thinking surely the next turn would be the one that brought us to our destination. After an hour of this endless spiral pattern we decided to stop at a little diner in the downtown that was packed for the Friday lunch hour.

Almost all of the tables were filled and we were led immediately to a tiny two-seater booth in the back near the kitchen. Our waitress quickly came to greet us in a warm southern fashion and was soon off to get our iced teas and put in our order.

Now that we were waiting for our drinks and trying yet again to decipher the directions that were given to us for the old mill, I started absorbing in the activity that surrounded me. There were frosted white Plexiglas dividers between the booths adorned with small Santa Claus cling-ons that were so faded that I’m sure that they were saved year after year. Pictures of old muscle cars in plastic frames hung on the walls, and some kind of trophies lined the back counter.

Our waitress returned with the tea, smiling and laughing, and preceded to tell us that she has just received the best Christmas present she had ever gotten from a customer…a fur coat. She was so excited and proud as she told us it was a $200 coat and that all of the other waitresses wanted it for themselves. She pointed it out for us to see, lying over the back counter. From where I sat, it didn’t look like an extremely expensive coat, but it certainly made her day, and that’s all that mattered. She left us to our tea and raced off to another customer.

I started to scan the room, taking in the hustle and bustle of the lunchtime crowd. This diner was a melting pot for the city: business men in suits, middle-aged women taking a break from holiday shopping, eclectic looking twenty-somethings that were surely rising artists, construction workers, and old couples who made this stop a routine in their lives. Conversations were loud and excited and ranged from local politics to busy traffic, business to creative arts, and the economy to shopping lists. Back in the kitchen you heard the hurried clatter of dishes and laughter about stories from the night before, and that one waitress that endlessly went on about the fact that they were out of cornbread and it was only 11:30.

The activity was overwhelming, causing me to just silently sit and ponder over this diner that was probably filled with a hundred people. But instead of feeling lost in a sea of faces, it felt like a really large family get-together. My gaze kept wandering over to a man sitting at the counter, dressed in a uniform that looked like the ones that auto parts dealers wear. He was sitting alone, well, as alone as you could be here in this restaurant, and had just been served his food. His head was bowed, hands in lap, and he was praying before his meal. Slowly he prepared to eat. He seasoned his food with the small set of salt and pepper shakers ever so gingerly and rearranged his food on his plate making sure that each thing was exactly where he wanted it. He slowly cut pieces of his food and slid them into piles on his plate and laid his silverware out with the utmost care. He was seemingly unaware of the intense action that surrounded him, as if he was in his own world entirely. Watching the graceful slowness of his movements reminded me of watching a Japanese Tea Ceremony, peaceful and serene. Each bite that he took was purposeful and he chewed slowly and methodically, laying his fork down between each bite.

This man was perfectly content and purely living in the moment. He didn’t feel the need to read the newspaper while he ate or chat with the neighboring customer; instead he gave his food his focused attention.

He was Zen in the middle of chaos, and while most others were unaware of his very existence, I was aware, and thought to myself “Namaste. Whatever your appearance, I see and greet the soul in you”.

Diner culture has always intrigued me. More times than not, I choose to seek out these local spots to eat at, shunning away the fast food joints or high priced chains. There’s something special about these historic eateries.

Many have asked what my attraction is to ‘Diner Culture’, and I guess after consideration I would have to say that is makes me feel like I am close to home. I treasure the sense of diversity that can be found here, diversity much different than in other public places. In the diner you can find a conglomeration of cultures without pretense, so natural, defenses down and full of the integrity of humanness. Intrigued by watching how we as human beings interact with one another, studying character, and how we all intermingle and find a peace with others and ourselves is one of my passions.

The Shaman Tree…ominous and wise…stands stately in the ground

Rooted in the soils of balance…touching the heavens of the Divine.

Within its aging body, by synchronized design,

It is a seat for Earth’s children.

An embrace, comforting and warm,

A place of peace.

Heavy heart and anxiousness lead me to the Tree

In search of clarity …of confirmation.

My approach is with reverence,

Each step becoming slower,

Each movement with full consciousness.

The gentle breeze dances about me, welcoming me back home.

Sacred Box for Sage, Sweetgrass, or Special Treasures

I have collected and been gifted many sacred pieces over the years, from different cultures and religions. My collection is large, old Native American beadwork, Rosary beads from around the world, Statuary of Deities and I am forever looking for little places to keep them safe and treasured.

I have started to create Sacred Boxes and Shrines for this purpose, initially for me personally, but will now offer them to others.

I was always needing a place to store my Sage and Sweetgrass, and never felt like keeping them in a pouch in a drawer was sufficient. So I started making special boxes to keep them in.

Remember those days when you were young, a teenager or an early twenty-something, and your thoughts were filled with all the confusion of what you will do with your life? What CAN I do with my life? A time when your Road was just beginning, the choices were unlimited, and the only thing stopping you was your own naivete?

I look back on those years and recall all of those fleeting thoughts that ran through my head about what I could do with my life and how I would live it. Much of my thoughts at that time were combined with the thoughts of "How will my disability change my course?" " Can I realistically do all of the things my heart desires?"

The second painting in my series of Extracting the Raw is "Awake". Awake is my recollection of becoming conscious again in my hospital room, of people there for me. In some ways I recognized them. They were familiar, but seemed different. Now I was a part of something else..a statistic, a number, a case file. I felt so much was missing, literally and figuratively, and a sense of loss of my "clan".

I think it was then that I brought "Lizard Medicine" into my world, the ability to lose something and still survive. (Lizard can lose his tail if needed to in order to survive, retreat, and go through the process of re-growing his tail). I of course do not have the ability to regrow my amputation, but instead filled the gap with something else.....Spirit.

The first painting created for the series is called the Long Corridor. It is a memory I carry from the age of 4, with the fear and anticipation of being taken to the Operating Room for my amputation surgery. The waves of water that carry me there are the emotions that I held, but did not share with any other person.

Childhood is left behind those doors, for when I emerge, the challenges that lie ahead require a more serious spirit.

The beginning of 2011 is just mere hours away. Deciding how to welcome it in is probably just as important as how we live it. As I let the slide show run through my mind of the year's progress, I think of how events unfolded and my perceptions of those events. Some of those memories are beautiful and happy, and others sad and weary. Though I choose not to let the more negative ones weigh on me, clouding my judgement, because it's all about the journey isn't it? These are the things that make us who we are. Life is messy. Life is unpredictable. And, Life is the ultimate schoolroom. How we perceive the event, decides who we are.

I accept that I cannot control the things around me, but I can control how I react to those things. I strive for my dreams and have the ultimate faith that my dreams will be realized. How I get there...that is part of the story that keeps me sitting on the edge of my seat, turning the pages with anticipation.

My wish for myself and those around me is that we create a beautiful story together, and that as the pages turn we feel fulfilled, supported, inspired, joyful, and complete. That our wants and needs are always met by the infinite energy of the Universe, and that we have fun getting there on the journey.

Animal Totem Wisdom

It's always amazing to me what we learn from one another, not only from human to human, but also from animal to human. For as long as I can remember, animals were significant in my life and as I grew older and studied more about them, I became more fully aware of how relevant this study was.

I personally believe that there is much wisdom to be learned from the animal kingdom, because of their purity. They are not clouded by so many of the hurdles that we place on ourselves through life, such as low self esteem, or building walls around ourselves to protect our feelings. They are of pure heart and represent this wonderful Circle of Life that we are all a part of.

Knowing your life-long totem is like having an added perspective. When you are in the midst of confusion, trying to make sense of an issue, often you can look to your animals totem's attributes and gain another perspective to view the situation in. That other perspective can be very helpful to us in our personal growth.

Totem meanings may vary slightly from culture to culture, but they can all have somewhat universal meanings if you are deriving them from learning about the animals social and living skills.

As an added bonus, we can have transitional totems. Transitional totems appear when we going through life changes, such as a marriage, a career change, a birth, etc. Transitional totems are prevalent for a short time while we go through our changes.

I recently revised a small guidebook on the meaning of some of the more popular animal totems, called "Animal Totems in our Daily Lives". It is a good introduction to Animal Totems, what they mean to us, life long totems, transitional totems, and symbolism. The Power of Words and Laws of Attraction

The energy we put out to the Universe, in our Words or in our Thoughts, is the energy that is returned to us. When we exude positive energy, this is what is returned. The power of our thoughts and words is important to manage,not only for the continual flow we are manifesting, but also for our own well-being.

With 2010 nearing it's conclusion, many people spend time thinking about New Year resolutions, or what it is they want to manifest in their future. A very important part of this process that is often overlooked is the ability to use affirmations to succeed in making their dreams come true.

An affirmation is stating that something is true. You are affirming that the possibility is reality. (One of the first steps in manifesting your desires)

After you have spent time deciding what it is you want to make a reality, writing affirmations can be a useful tool. It can help remind you of your goals and keep a positive attitude.
When writing your affirmations, keep them in the present tense. Use words such as "am", "have", "attract", and "is". Make sure you aren't using words like "hope", which suggests that you aren't positive the change will happen.

Writing your affirmations and keeping them visible in your home,or repeating them, helps to condition the subconscious, who's fear can sometimes sabotage our efforts.

Examples:

"I know that Healing is taking place in my body"

" Financial riches flow freely to me"

' I attract only loving, positive, and supportive people to my life"

When they would return home, they would take the basket from their back, and hang it at the entrance of their dwelling...literally laying their burdens down for the night before entering the home.

Smaller burden baskets have been made to symbolize this...for you, your family, and friends to "Leave your worries at the door."

Creating Your Own Medicine Doll ~ Winter Workshop

As the Winter Season approaches I will be offering a Doll Workshop, but this year's will focus on creating your own Medicine Doll. I will create a special place for spending some introspective time on creating your own Medicine Doll, a doll that is empowering, inspiring, and created by you...for you.

The morning will begin with sipping Organic Teas, soft music playing, and a journaling session to focus your creative intent. Your journaling page will be done on handmade paper to keep as a part of the process.

The rest of the day will be spent on creating the doll.

You will be sculpting each face out of Prosculpt clay. Their bodies will be cloth. Each doll will be approximately 10 inches tall.

I am providing the fabrics, clay, beads, notions, and templates. I ask each participant to bring any special embellishments they might want to add ~ crystals, special beads, charms, etc. You will have the option of not only creating it's beauty on the outside, but filling the inside with just as much beauty, such as lavender, crytals, affirmations...thus truly creating a Medicine Doll.

A beautiful workshop for the Winter Season that will bring a creative, nurturing, and supportive process of empowerment to women.

Visiting Our Spirit Place

It's been long over due and sorely missed, but this afternoon we finally were able to return to our Spirit Place...the place where we have pulled off on many afternoons in days gone by...a place where we have rejoiced after visits with friends...a place where John proposed to me...a place where we feel totally connected with something bigger than ourselves.

A serene place along the Broad River and nestled in the mountains near Chimney Rock, is our place. As we park and head toward the water, our hearts beat a little faster, knowing that soon we will find complete peace. After a few minutes of carefully negotiating your footsteps down the paths, the arrival at the river welcomes us with sunshine and the first thing I want to do....lay my hand on the rocks and say hello to our old friend.

It's here that we take the biggest breath of relief in the past few months. That we release our worries, even if momentarily, and allow our beings to relax in the knowing. We watch a pair of crows that are diligently working on building their nest, and relate to them as we quietly watch their movements.

They fly high over our heads back and forth and pay us humans no attention as they focus on their task, maybe reminding us to do the same.

We walk a bit over the large rocks and boulders, each step taken in reverence, at the beauty that surrounds us. Few words are spoken on this trip, they aren't needed. It's here that we remember who we are with one another and enjoy the peace that is emanating between us.

The waters are clean and cool, cleansing for the body and soul. John drinks from the river and meditates briefly while I am pulled to go explore.

As I head the other way I feel pulled to a quiet place where I feel the presence of a bear. No, I do not see him, but feel him in the woods on the other side of the river, watching us two-legged ones with interest. With my camera in tow, I take a few shots of the water that just glistens with sparkles of light dancing along the top and I think of the old Cherokee stories of the wee ones and where they may be hiding.

Soon we feel it's time to leave our spot. We have been here long enough, are replenished with balance, and it's time to give it back to those that live here. So grateful for the day, beautiful and warm.

The Best Part of Being an Artist

Waking up at 4am this morning, is my prodding to write before I start my day. Sometimes it may be a poem, a short story, a blog post, or part of the book that I am writing that seems as if it is taking forever. I love this part of the day, when everything is quiet and you feel as if you are all alone in the universe, except for the gentle stirrings of life nearby..the birds rustling in the trees, a lone car going down the road. This morning the rain is the only thing that is awake, gently pattering on the roof and bringing a chill to the mountain.

As I make my tea, I think about the creations I am going to work on today in getting ready for this weekend's show. And although most everyday is filled with the passion of Art which I dearly love, I know that I work harder and longer every day than I did when I worked the typical 9-5. The difference with doing something you are in love with and just working the "job"...I don't get burned out. The creative flow is continual, which makes me yearn for more hours in the day. But if asked, "What is your favorite part of being an artist?" my reply would be sharing it, watching and listening to those that view it. I love to stand off to the side and watch and listen to how people engage with it, what is makes them feel, what it makes them remember. A silent conversation that goes on between us, a part of my soul communicating with a part of yours.

When I create my art dolls, I want them to speak to you, to tell you their own story. Their facial expressions are what people connect with.

It doesn't matter, man or woman, young or old, I am connecting with you on the most vulnerable level of me.

And while I am focused on the visual aspects, John's primary medium is through his Native Flute music which is so absolutely beautiful. The biggest joy, playing music for the children and watching their smiles.

These are the things that connect us as humans, the stories, the laughter, the understanding of one another. This is what lets me know that it is indeed possible to be at peace with one another and leave our baggage and separatism at the door. This is why I love being an artist.

A Love Letter...to our home

Oh these Blue Ridge Mountains...hello old friend. We have missed you so. We have traveled long and far and our weary souls could feel ourselves getting nearer to your beauty and magical embrace.

In all of my life, I don't think that I have ever truly lived in such a place that could just make my heart sing the way these mountains can. We are so blessed to know this land, to smell their mountain breezes, to feel the warmth of the sun through the tree tops.

Your morning mists hold stories from long ago that we cherish and still tell to this day. The perfect place to hold a remembrance of the past while looking to the future, a remarkable balance in the circle of life.

Sometimes in life we have to go away in order to find ourselves, to understand ourselves. And I am thankful that the journey has led us back to you.
It is so good to be home, and even though we have so much work to do to re-establish, just stepping outside and being here...right here....I know that everything is as it should be.
We are blessed to know a love like this.

Power Shopping for Art

Our last day at the Artisan Market in Grants Pass was yesterday. The weather was great and attendance even better. Lots of people downtown with the combination of the Artisan Market, the Grower's Market, and Art Along the Rogue's Chalk Art festivities.

So many of our friends came by to see us before we leave and lots of hugging exchanged.Sales were up nicely yesterday.

Our morning started out with a visit from our friends Heidi and Don.

Don adopted my "Stargatherer" painting,

but when I wrapped it and slid it into the shopping bag, he asked me if I had a bag that was a little more manly.

I reassured him that the bag would in no way take away from his manliness....

We were blessed with the many friendly faces that came to see us... the art card swap with Heidi, a cd from Key of Three, a touching gift from Kim, seashells and goodies from Darla, and so many hugs and well wishes for us.. too many to list.

When I paint, the subject is not chosen by what I think is the most popular collectible, rather it is on a more intuitive level. Through out my day I am always jotting down images and ideas that have come to me with a "I must do this" attachment to them. Spreading the Love and Sharing the Art in September

September is a busy time doing shows for me and John. Tomorrow morning we will be up at 5am to head off to the Artisan Market, which is the only market day we will be doing in Grants Pass this month.
The following week, Sept. 10th, 11th, and 12th, we will be traveling up to Winston Oregon to do their 42nd Annual Festival for three days. This one has long days and we will have to set up lights in our booth because the first two days of the show run until 9pm.
Then on Sept. 18th and 19th we travel on to Bend, Oregon to do that thing that we do at the Bend Fall Festival.
And finally, the last weekend of the month we will be in Prospect Oregon at the Music on the Mountain Festival for two days.

This will definitely be a month of working non stop, creating in between the shows AND preparing for the big move in October. But, that's what it's all about, right? Spreading the love and Sharing the Art....it's what we love...

And if need be, I'll let John take naps in the back of the booth if he gets too tired... ;)

Getting Ready for the Shady Cove River Art Walk

John's Flute Music Endeavours

If you haven't come out to hear John perform recently, you might not be aware that he is in a new band called Windscape 3.

Windscape 3 offers an eclectic, jazzy, folk and world beat blend of original music and songs. With tribal jazz pieces in an acoustical setting they use modern and ancient world instruments to create that "feel good" ambience in most every setting.

They will be having a CD release in June 2010.

"Art for Healing ~ A Look at Hope for our Lifetime"

On May 7th, Jeanne will begin showing her new series of paintings named
"Art for Healing ~ A Look at Hope for our Lifetime".
Faced with her own health challenges since the age of four ,which are becoming more pronounced at an older age, she finds herself a "statistic" in the current healthcare challenges in our country. During this process, she has found she needs to draw upon her own inner strength and spirituality for a state of "soulful" well-being.
The paintings began when she found the need to surround herself with the vibrancy of inspiring images and colorwork that were dear to her own heart.

Jeanne will officially be showing the series during the First Friday in Ashland event on May 7th at the Mystic Trading Company. Between now and that time, I invite lovers of art and those that support healing the complete being, to enter into a contest.

Hummingbird Medicine - Animal Totem

This beautiful bird packs a lot of energy into it's little body. He is skillful in flight, very agile and even able to fly backwards. His quickness reminds us to take advantage of life while we can and enjoy every minute of it. Seize the moment !

They feed on the nectar of flowers and insects, taking in numerous small meals in a day. (This is sometimes a reminder to those that are hypoglycemic - to eat small meals throughout the day regularly. )They hibernate at night to reserve the energy they took in, showing you the need for deep, restful, healing sleep at night.

This little winged one brings us beauty, and the lesson to appreciate and share it. It tells us that anything is possible if we put our minds to it.

Lizard Medicine - Animal Totem

Lizard Medicine is dear to my heart.

The Lizard can move quickly and with a silent grace. He is well attuned to his surroundings and what is going on around him, symbolizing a sense of intuition, and the need to trust in your own intuition. He also symbolizes the dreamtime, and for those that connect with their dreams - the ability to receive messages or guidance during this time.

If Lizard loses his tail in a certain situation, he has the ability to grow one back. This is a form of protection and survival. It symbolizes being able to leave something behind - that we no longer need - in order to move on and grow.

To me, Lizard is an excellent totem, with the ability to guide us through the lessons in life. Reminding us that sometimes we need to leave something behind that we have outgrown, in order to grow spiritually and mentally. He tells us to trust in our own judgement - our own intuition - to assist in making the choices in life easier and more conducive on our path.

Animal Totems

In many cultures, it is believed that there are valuable lessons that can be learned from the animals. By studying their mannerisms and the ways in which they live and survive, many times those lessons can be applied to our own lives.

I have found after studying animals social behaviors that frequently the lessons that the animal can give, often apply to a current situation that I am experiencing.

I was taught by an elder a long time ago, that we have one animal totem throughout our life, and several other totems will come in and out during transformational periods.

Do you know your animal totem? How can you find out?

Tomorrow I will begin to discuss that, and spend some time each day for the next few weeks talking about several different animals and their meanings.
