Crow's Garden of Dreams with Spiral Sun Blooms

The Crow is skilled in manifesting, being such an intelligent bird that uses communication, team work, and available tools, that I use him frequently in my artwork that focuses on dreams and manifesting our desires.
My new painting "Crow's Garden of Dreams" was created for those who have had dreams that have not yet fully materialized and are feeling a bit of stagnancy. Crow reminds us to be patient in manifesting our dreams and to carefully "tend to the garden" feeding love and care and positive energy into that which we are creating. Soon the dreams will begin to bloom, rich and vibrant, and will have been worth the wait.

Miniature Traveling Shrines for Focused Intentions

I create my Art much like I live my life. I believe in Symbolism. Everything holds a meaning and has a symbolic purpose in our life. I honor nature and her diversity. I honor the animals and the lessons they teach. And I honor each thing that I bring into my home, for each has a purpose dear to my heart.
This week I worked on some miniature shrines, or traveling shrines, since they are so easy and portable to take wherever you want them. Each are a piece of mixed media altered art that began from an altoid tin. Hours were spent on their intentions, their color schemes, and their embellishments making sure that each step of the process was purposeful and precise.
Miniature Altered Art Traveling Shrines by Jeanne Fry

When working with this grouping of shrines, I knew right away what each creation would be. I was creating one for The Love and Happiness of the Dragonfly, one for Reflection, one for Prosperity and Abundance, one for Bear Totem Medicine, and one honoring the perseverance and passion of Frida Kahlo.
Usually when I create a shrine I do so in a larger format and out of wooden boxes, but I do love the versatility of this small size.

Stone Crow Shape Shifter

The woman had been feeling empty for years, alone and lost. Each year she had lost more and more little pieces of herself , in relationship and circumstance. After time her face had appeared to look as if it were made of stone, revealing a cold emptiness...until she found a crow mask while out walking.
Stone Crow  Shape Shifter Folk Art Painting by Jeanne Fry
Once she put on the mask, she was filled with emotion again. She found her voice and felt a completeness in her being. She was able to create within her life again, manifesting her desires and reclaiming all those lost pieces of herself.
Now she is a part of the Crow Clan. She communicates and journeys with them. She has  found her new home.

Remembering Who You Are Goddess Divine Feminine Folk Art

I think that in every woman's life, (or at least every woman that I know), there comes a point when you begin to feel fragmented. Those feelings and questions to our inner self come up, asking "Where did I go?" "Has anyone seen those little pieces of me?"
Along the way, we often lose pieces of ourselves...some we gave up thinking we were doing so for the better good...some just got lost here and there. Life changes and relationships, give and take, and compromises can all lead to dropping these little pieces of ourselves until soon we begin to feel empty and may not even recognize who we are. When we reach this point, we often start taking inventory of our life and set out on a journey of self discovery and self recovery.
This time of life is what inspired my most recent painting, "Remembering Who You Are".
"Remembering Who You Are" a spiritual art painting by Jeanne Fry
"Remember Who You Are" is a contemporary folk art painting, full of spiritual symbolism, by Jeanne Fry. The painting is inspired by the Divine Feminine and the Goddesses that existed in another time. It is a reminder to those who are on their spiritual journey to reclaim those pieces of themselves that they have lost or forgotten along the way...to complete their portrait of "oneness" within. It is a call to honor our complex spirit, the light and the dark, the happy and the sad, and bring forth our authenticity of self.

This painting is dedicated to all of my goddess sisters, in gratefulness for how we support one another.

Nubian Goat Totem Symbolism

The Nubian Goat is rich in symbolism.Goats were one one of the earliest domesticated animals because of their many attributes, sought for their milk, meat, and hide.Their milk has a higher butterfat content and is generally easily digested by humans. Their hides are used for leathers in crafting everything from rugs to clothing to bags.
They represent abundance and fertility to us, a continual sustenance to satisfy our needs.
Goat and Sunflower, a contemporary folk art painting by Jeanne Fry
Goats are strong and easily adapt to varying terrain. They are excellent climbers and carry a surety in their step. Before goats were bred and domesticated, they tended to live in mountainous regions. They can adapt to their surroundings and do so with a careful and thoughtful step, showing us that when life gives us challenges to proceed with an awareness and courage.
Their climbing ability to the tops of the geographical peaks was representative of being able to see the "big picture" and attaining a stronger connection to that which is larger than us.One could say that the goat is symbolic of balance and perspective.

The Bridge Between Earth and Sky, a contemporary folk art series

I have always been fascinated by the elements of the Earth and the Sky, and the blending of the two. Much like our striving for a balance between the physical world and the loftier heights of the ethereal world within ourselves, this is a perfect representation. This walking between both worlds is what has inspired a new series of paintings called "Bridge Between Earth and Sky".
The series will consist of eleven paintings each symbolizing aspects of the Earth, Sky, or both... and the growth that is associated. As each of the paintings are created, I will continue to add them here to this blog post. This series will not be hung at gallery, but will only be shown online.

The Bridge Between Earth and Sky, contemporary folk art painting by Jeanne Fry
This painting is the focus painting of a new series I am creating called "The Bridge Between Earth and Sky". In the painting, I am expressing the relationship between the Earth and the Sky, in it's contrast and in it's likeness.Much like our striving for a balance between the physical world and the loftier heights of the ethereal world within ourselves, this is a perfect representation. It symbolizes our spiritual sense within our body on an earthly plane, and keeping the balance between the two.

Seasons of an Artist and Wisdom in a Pumpkin Patch

The inspirations that can  influence an artist's work are varied and diverse, but the change of the seasons is usually a common thread between them. Whether their themes are on nature or not, the environment  can lend a hand in their work by color choice or symbolic perspective.
Pumpkins and Gourds posing at the Pumpkin Farm

My art does is fact focus on nature, the symbolism of the seasons, animal totem meanings, and how all of these things lend to our emotional and spiritual growth as humans. The arrival of Fall is my most loved season and has been since I was a child. The chill in the air, the comfort of a sweater, the embrace of Mother Nature as she splashes the landscape with fiery passionate colors, and the knowing of how important the need to be grateful for soon a quiet, barren, and introspective time will be creeping over the mountain. Fall wraps around my heart reminding me of tradition and family and a closeness of the spirit.
Brilliant Orange of Nature's Bounty

This past weekend we took the day to venture about through Apple Country here in the Blue Ridge Mountains, where apple and pumpkin farms and roadside stands are frequent while traveling down the winding roads. A stop at the Cabbage Shack, where yes you guessed it, they sell cabbage. Not the usual run of the mill cabbage that you see in the grocery, but "mountain cabbage" which are large and a rich green with brilliantly full leaves.

At the Cabbage Shack

Mountain Cabbage

Choosing one of them is like choosing one diamond from a mine..they all look wonderful. And while getting a cabbage at The Cabbage Shack may seem like a very mundane chore...to me it is getting a gift from the Earth, a gift that was made specifically for the good of my body. You can feel the nutrients through those leaves and at that moment I am present and in tune with listening to my body, it's needs, and our connection with the Earth. The nurturing of my body is almost a meditation for me.

And soon I am drawn further down the road to the pumpkins and the gourds, for what would Fall be without them? Today everyone is out getting pumpkins. Many tourists have come to our little spot in the mountains for this experience, and the choices are many. I of course have recipes running through my mind, because I couldn't imagine just cutting one up, but need to have a use...so my plan is to roast pumpkin seeds, make a pumpkin seed brittle, and to make a Sausage Pumpkin and Sage Casserole.

Choosing my pumpkins

And as you can see, we both have different likes

And of course, this one needed to find it's home with us

Now you may be thinking I have totally veered off topic here...what does this have to do with the seasons of an artist? Well...everything. Because it is about the art of living, the art of being, and the art of connecting with natural elements. When we have mastered this, we have unlimited inspirations in creating  and it allows us to sit at the canvas with our authentic selves. Our ability to make our mundane chores become a grateful meditation, and our appreciation for life in all forms, brings a wider scoped perspective to our artwork.

And while my art always revolves around nature and empowerment, it does change during this season...bringing a different color palette and a different view of ourselves as humans during this season. A deeper richness comes forth, and because I personally resonate with this time of year...my work will come from a deeper place within me. Since Autumn arrived it has reflected this different tone...

Artwork by Jeanne Fry

Happy Fall everyone and I hope you resonate with the magic of the season.

Our Roots Go Deep and Tree Symbolism

Once again I find my spirit being drawn back to the tree who's symbolism is so powerful in my life. I have written and painted many versions of trees, their silhouettes, and the Tree of Life, each time I suppose to recreate my connection with them. In doing so I am reaffirming my honor for what they mean to me. On an immediate level they speak to me of Longevity, their strength in years, their presence on this Earth. Because of their symbolism of Time, it makes me pause and think of their presence through change, watching their environment evolve around them continually yet they continue on their path, every growing and striving for the skies. On a human level I guess it makes me yearn for that ability to diligently stay on my own course through the plethora of bright and stormy days, untouched by the actions of others or the terms of life.
Our Roots Go Deep Folk Art Painting by Jeanne Fry
Lastly, their symbolism for History inspires me. All that they have seen and endured, making them the beings they are today.
The quote by Kim Novak comes to mind..."Just touching that old tree was truly moving to me because when you touch these trees, you have such a sense of the passage of time, of history. It's like you're touching the essence, the very substance of life."

Thank you for once again allowing me to share how important the Tree and it's symbolism are to me.

Star Spirit and her Blanket of Dreams

The body's need for rest, for a peaceful and restorative sleep, has become more and more prevalent to me the past several months. I know this not only for myself, but for others around me. Be it from stress, worry, health issues, or habit...the lack of the body's healing sleep creeps in and takes hold creating a negative spiral effect in how we walk through our days. When we lose our natural rhythm with the Earth and Sky elements it changes our mood, perspective, health, and communication skills. And when these are altered, so are our Dreams.
Star Spirit and her Blanket of Dreams by Jeanne Fry
This was the inspiration for one of my new paintings, "Star Spirit and her Blanket of Dreams".
"When the sun goes down and the skies begin to dim, the Star Spirit arrives from her little spot in the Universe to perform her most important job. Her fellow star beings and constellations gather around her to emit their twinkling glow as she gently and lovingly unwraps her blanket....the Blanket of Dreams. As she covers the sky with the blanket and smooths it out with her careful fingertips...it brings a sense of comfort to all beings as they are laying their heads down for the night to rest. The blanket brings sweet dreams of love, healing, and aspirations, nurturing our hopes for tomorrow."

Moose Totem Symbolic Meaning

The Moose Totem, one from the animal kingdom that can captivate us in awe, immediately teaches us to not judge a book by it's cover. Because of his large stature and build one would think of them as awkward, but in reality they are quite graceful and adept in their mobility. They have the gift of acclamation and can navigate many types of terrain with skill.
"Moose Medicine" a contemporary folk art painting by Jeanne Fry

They move with ease between land and water, a bridge to both worlds, and their link with the water gives them a strong connection with emotions and cleansing...the ability to relate well with others but to also be content alone.

Moose is a mentor for building confidence, encouraging those to utilize all of their senses and create a diverse skill set for living in the world...to know when to make their presence known and when to be discreet...to be flexible with changes and learn to work with them...and to live each moment being "aware".

It is an excellent totem for those with careers where they need to exhibit diplomacy, to have the ability to know when to be strong and firm, and when to be more delicate and gentle.

Moose has the ability to understand self and others and how to be flexible on this journey through life.

Seahorse Totem Symbolic Meaning

The Seahorse is a mystical little being, not often seen by most of us, but an intriguing member of the sea kingdom who's beauty and delicate nature can captivate. The seahorse could be known as the "Buddha of the ocean" due to the patience and diligence he expresses. They "live in the present" and are happy staying in their own little section of the sea, content and serene. They feed on foods that float by them, so they can also be found latching on to nearby plants, waiting..eating.."being".

They have a shared responsibility in mating after a very long courtship and ceremonial dances. Time and attention is paid to detail. In fact, their shared responsibility is shown in their reproduction, as the female deposits her eggs in the male seahorse's pouch, and he carries them until they are born.
Seahorse can remind us to slow down, enjoy each moment, and appreciate what we have.

"Unveiling of the Animal Totem Gathering" Animal Totem Gourd Mask

For the deep love I have for animal totems and their special meanings in our lives, I felt compelled to create a gourd mask that represented a few of my most admired ones. The creation is symbolic for the gathering of their energies and wisdom that they offer, including Heron, Crow, Deer, Hawk, Bear, Otter, Owl, Wolf, Lizard, and Dragonfly.

Animal Totem Gourd Mask "Unveiling of the Animal Totem Gathering"

"Unveiling the Animal Totem Gathering" was created to bring the energy of the animal totems to present, to learn from their symbolism, and remind one of their skills. The animals represented are Crow, Hawk, Heron, Bear, Otter, Dragonfly, Owl, Wolf, Lizard, and Deer. Their simple animal totem meanings are:
Crow: Manifesting, Magic, Creation
Heron: Graceful Transformation
Deer: Gentless, Grace, Nurturing
Otter: Happiness and Laughter in spite of the circumstances
Bear: Power, Decision Making, Healing
Dragonfly: Air and Water Element, Flight, Ariel Skills, Dance of Light
Hawk: Vision, Power, Seeking
Wolf: Community, Guardianship, Pack Oriented
Owl: Vision, Hunter, Omens, Wisdom
Lizard: Dreamtime, Intuition, Letting go of that which is not needed

Animal Totem Gourd Mask by Conscious Art Studios
"Unveiling of the Animal Totem Gathering" is an animal totem mask for wall display. The mask is created from a gourd which is shaped and cut and mounted on a wood plaque that measures 10 inches x 10 inches. The mask is painted with acrylics in burnt umber, turquoise, and tan colored and then detailed with animal totem silhouettes and tracks of the Crow, Heron tracks, Bear, Otter prints, Hawk, Dragonfly, Wolf prints, Lizard, and Owl. The mask was then sealed with a satin finish. A multitude of man created feathers were used to create the crown of the mask representing a number of bird totems. The plaque was painted in burnt umber with tan colored designs and has a hanger installed on the back for display purposes. The piece in it's entirety measures 14 inches x 14 inches.
This piece is to be shipped double boxed to protect the feather work and will be insured.

If you would like to acquire this special piece you can view it's listing here in my Artfire Studio

Soaring Eagle Totem and it's Symbolism

The Bald Eagle is rich in symbolism and greatly revered for it's majestic persona. In particular, the bald eagle is representative of the Feminine, of great healing, oneness with the universe, and a wisdom from those that walked before us. It's beautiful mantel of white feathers on it's head symbolize a great connection spiritually and the ability to look at the "bigger picture".
Soaring Eagle Painting by Jeanne Fry
They soar high and hunt low, bridging the gap between the sky and earth. Their 4 toes, for the four directions, represent a completeness, a wholeness of the spirit.
Soaring Eagle Painting by Jeanne Fry
As a predator, they are highly adept in their hunting. Perching until they go in for the swoop...reminding us to  hone our skills and be confident when seeking what we desire. They use their balanced character  and all senses while hunting, being "one" with the universe while gliding through the circle of life.

Abstracts in Emotion ~ Passion

Sometimes life throws you a curve ball and you are forced to change. The transformation can manifest in many ways. As an artist, I find our creativity evolves with these life occurrences and our personal growth.
Recently I found this evolution in my own artwork yet again. My art usually represents my philosophies and experience, and as I grow and evolve personally and meander through my own journey in life, as does so on the canvas. A few days ago  a canvas sat before me and my physical body was greatly fatigued.I studied on that canvas...almost a meditation. Inside my spirit had so much it wanted to release even though this body did not necessarily want to follow suit. Knowing that my usual style of painting would be too intricate and controlled, that day I needed to bring my feelings to the canvas with a graceful ease, a flow from the heart to the hand. This was the creation.
"Passion" by Jeanne Fry
The inspiration behind this painting is symbolic of a "feeling"....a feeling that comes from that place deep inside your belly where your desire..your passion for life..and your creativity reside. No matter how many things are piled on your shoulders, no matter the challenges that you face, nor how weathered you may feel....deep inside this place you are vibrant, alive, and your passion burns on.
I am not sure how long this style of work will stay with me, but I am grateful for the inspiration and ability as always, and will release and create as long as the fire burns in my belly.
Namaste,
Jeanne

Dragonfly Totem Meaning

Dragonflies are one of the most beautiful and delicate animal totems to work with. They will usually  show up when one needs to be reminded of keeping a balance in their emotions. It reminds us to look at different perspectives and to live in the present.
Dragonfly Photo by John Fry

The dragonfly's beauty of light and color encourage us to let our own light shine, and in turn encourages others to do the same. They can inspire us with their balance of skill, agility, and strength while all the while doing so with grace and ease.
Their excellent aeriel skills, symbolic of gliding gracefully through life with it's many twists and turns, can lead us by example to do the same

Red Tailed Hawk ~ His Spirit and Symbolic Meaning

Red Tailed Hawk Totem Symbolism
The Red Tailed Hawk is a powerful animal totem signifying Vision. He asks us to watch for confirmations, and listen for messages as we  travel  on our journey. Being aware and having a sense of peace is important in order to be conscious of those timely clues that are shown to us. If we are distracted by stresses, we may miss the "answers" that exist.

The hawk allows us to see the bigger picture and our connection with it. While we are continually making choices in regards to our daily living and how to handle a situation for today, the Hawk exists to also help us with "tomorrow". He helps to bridge the gap of "What can I do today that will lay the groundwork for my future?" He can also bring a better understanding of how we are all woven together in a fabric that creates "The All".

The hawk is a wonderful  totem to work with when one is focused on living a life that resonates with their spirit. He inspires one to soar, to see and reach their highest potential, and to do so with  powerful grace and ease. Hawk demonstrates how to find that needed balance between body, mind, and spirit....to connect with something higher, utilize our intuition, and yet stay balanced in every day life.
When Hawk shows up as a totem, profound meaning and growth are certain to appear.

A Serendipitous Moment with the Hawk
(updated on 2-11-2014)

I wanted to share a special moment with you that I had with the Hawk today. This morning I was in my studio finishing up a gourd ceremonial rattle that I had been working on over the past few days. I had painted the head of a Red Tailed Hawk on the front of the rattle with some design work around the top. I was working on the leather wrapping of the handle and adding some wooden pony beads and tin cones after breakfast this morning. While I was working on it I was frequently looking out the window at the snow falling. It was very quiet and serene as the large snow flakes drifted down. I happened to look out at one point and a very large and beautiful hawk came flying down and landed on the deck railing outside my studio window. I sat and watched him silently, not wanting to startle him with my movement. He scanned the property, looking and contemplating. Time stood still as I watched him while he was on his hunt. He was so close I could see the snow flakes land on his beautiful feathers and melt as they touched him. I watched him as he flew off and then looked down, realizing I still had the Hawk Rattle in my hand. Tears welled in my eyes as I felt blessed by the Hawk, a confirmation to my spirit. I feel he left some of his energy with me and the rattle. I spent the day feeling grateful for my connection with Mother Earth and the animals, and grateful for my awareness. A few minutes later I walked outside to look at where he had landed on the deck rail. His prints were deep on the snow ledge. I took a photo of them to remember the moment.

Greeting your Inner Muse - Touch Drawing Workshop by Jeanne Fry

One of the most meaningful expressive art modalities is Touch Drawing. Touch Drawing is open to people of all artistic levels and helps one to explore personal growth on a new level.

Touch Drawing has endless applications as a tool for therapy, creativity, and spiritual awareness. Many use this inspiring technique in art workshops, spiritual enhancement workshops , or in environments such as hospice, domestic violence support , cancer patient support and
other similar areas in need of emotional and spiritual expression
.

Touch Drawing is a simple yet profound process. All you do is touch paper that has been placed over a surface of paint. The resulting impressions are seen on the other side of the page. Lines flow directly from your fingertips. Once you have completed the drawing and feel like you are finished....you turn the paper over and see the painting.
